Art Deco Design Contest

Winners of the Art Deco Chic competition will receive $200 to execute gowns, inspired by the exquisite clothing currently on show at the Museum of Vancouver. Curated by Ivan Sayers with Claus Jahnke, the exhibition is open until September 23.

Fashion illustrations by ten winning designers will also be displayed at the Museum of Vancouver.

Eligibility:
Open to Vancouver area emerging designers (out of fashion design school less than two years) and fashion design students; students are encouraged to consult with their faculty about the competition.

To enter the challenge:
Entrants select a garment in the Art Deco Chic exhibition as the inspiration for a contemporary fashion design.
Entrants submit to MOV by May 15, 2012:
• A full-colour 8 ½ x 11” fashion illustration depicting the front and back views of their design for a contemporary garment or outfit.
• A set of flats demonstrating the construction of the garments, with swatches of proposed fabric on 8 ½” x 11” paper.
• A written statement (no more than 250 words) describing how the particular Art Deco-era garment inspired their design of the contemporary garment/outfit.
• A resume that includes details about their attendance at a fashion design school since January 2010.

Selection process:
Ten challenge winners will be selected by a jury composed of exhibition guest curator Ivan Sayers, designer RozeMerie Cuevas, Jacqueline Conoir, and Jacqueline Kirby, publisher and editor of Threads Gazette, on-line West Coast fashion magazine

Prizes:
• The top three winners will be given bursaries of $200 each to be used towards the creation of the garment based on the winning designs. The three winning garments will be displayed at the Museum of Vancouver from September 1 to September 23, 2012.
• The fashion illustrations by the ten winning designers will be displayed at the Museum of Vancouver from September 1 to September 23, 2012.
• The winners and their work will be featured in a public program to be hosted at the Museum in September 2012 that will be open to the public and to media.
